Well, apparently they go to the American Village, among other things! There are tons of military bases on Okinawa, so there is a big American population on the island. One of the benefits of this is that many places cater to us English-speaking folks. Lots of signs have english translations, and lots of the restaurants have menus with either english (helpful) and/or pictures (really helpful!) Some of the translations are slightly entertaining...here are a couple of funny examples:
"Please clean away your dog's dung. Please take your garbage home."
I personally thought the picture with this was most helpful :)
"It may be junk to you, but its bread and butter to us."
Sign outside a store that sold lots of random American stuff...kind of like a thrift store.
So on Saturday our first stop was the American village. We went and had lunch in a Thai restaurant - there are tons of Thai restaurants here! You would think it would be mostly Japanese food, but the only real "Japanese" food I've had was sushi. And the sushi was amazing...even Dan thought so! Anyway, that's a whole different story.... So we had lunch at a Thai restaurant, then walked around the shops. Some of the guys were looking for souvenirs to take home to their families. There were lots of funny stores and t-shirts to look at, so it was lots of fun!

...and the American Depot
After the American village, we went to Shuri castle and a local fish market, so more pictures and posts to come later! Right now I need to go get ready to meet some friends and head out to the beach :) That's the Air Force for you...how else could I show up in Japan and already have friends here to catch up with??
